The handful of top American Domestic Breeders have already caught up to and surpassed the Japanese Breeders... of a few decades past that is. Their Japanese counterparts moved on from there long ago and the ever upward moving bar of excellence right along with them. I've seen some domestics that truly impress me, but then again I've never been to Japan to see the best of the best so I'm at a disadvantage going in. I'm enough of a realist to know that puts me and my eye at a distinct disadvantage, but I have seen some truly outstanding examples of Sakai, Yagenji, Dainichi, Momotaro, etc... mere inches from my face. Seeing a mature Kohaku that literally glows with youthful luster lays down an impression that is hard to forget and serves as a wonderful reality check. Several of those "quality benchmark" Koi are swimming in Texas, safely in the hands of Dan and Gene. If they're impressed with what Purdin is doing enough to invite Tom to compare side by side, that tells mes that Purdin has at least raised the "American" bar several notches. They possess both the skill and the facilities to bring a Koi as far as it can go. As to why our esteemed judges refrain from "Judge My Koi" threads, I fully understand and respect their abstinence. Some of those Koi will go on to be judged by them at a show somewhere down the road and prejudging a picture may leave a false impression of bias (good or bad) leaving them open to unjust criticism. It could also discourage someone from showing at all, and that does nothing to build the hobby.
