Not quite. Dispite the earthquakes, Japanese economy, world economy, suicides and KHV, the Japanese koi still sets the standard for the world.
We have seen domestic koi come so far in the last 10-15 years that I think it is natural to say they are just as good as Japan! Certainly these domestics of today can fool even the best judges out there when they are tosai and even sansai, at this point in their evolution. And that is REMARKABLE considering that just 15 years ago, the Arkansas Bekko was the prototype American fish! So hats off to the dozen or so pioneers here in America that have caused the koi kichi to turn heads! As a fellow American, I couldn't be more proud for them !
Tom, you should have been in San Diego this past AKCA show/seminar. There it was-- Proof for all to see. The GC in the main show was 60 feet away from the top winners in the American Breeder's Cup show. And those 'yankee' fish were VERY nice. But then there were those Japanese fish in the Amateur show- all Japanese imports.
NOW PLEASE, I love my American Breeder friends! So don't let what I'm about to say upset you---
The Japanese stock was FAR superior to the American domestics. And for me, that was re-enforcement that the Japanese breeders are safe from losing their designation as Champs of the world for at least another two decades ( assuming that they can't improve their stock any more).
The Japanese will always have the edge for 6 simple reasons;
1) time ( they've been doing it for a century)
2) Gene pool ( see point #1)
3) organization ( the Japanese talk and share lines and line information. In American the farms act in secret and are isolated from one another)
4) culture ( the Japanese have integrated their perspective of living art into the nishikigoi varieties)
5) wealth ( the breeders have the funds, government support and subsidies to grow many koi)
6) the world market ( the Japanese can grow literially millions upon millions of koi and be paid for it! as they have the world market. This can be plowed back into breeders and drive oyagoi prices to the moon)
But enough Sunday morning ramble! In short- look at Nancy and Frank's fish ( showa and kohaku), the kindai showa and the other showa at San diego and then look at the top fish in the breeder's show. In the top slots there is simply no comparison, the Japanese fish are in a league of their own. Will the Americans produce equal quality, size and selection in the next 25 years? Maybe. But for now that JR dollar seems very safe from this judges point of view.
