Good topic. Of all the pond equipment out there I see more improperly installed uv lights than anything. I would agree on placing the uv light before fines filtering. I usually install them in the middle so to speak. After pre-filtration and before fines/bio. This gives the unit relatively "clean" water and then the dying algae can be trapped by the filtration. I can see not using it before pressurized filtration but since I do everything possible to avoid the use of pressurized systems it's not much of an issue for me. There have been several times when I needed to use the unit in a downflow configuration because of plumbing so I simply drill and tap the top of the unit for a small fitting and run a little air bleed line out to the top of a filter. This prevents air entrappment and keeps the body full of water. Sometimes I modify the body and make it a downflow unit inside a filter barrel submerged in water when space or aesthetics is a serious concern. In those cases I just drill a bleed hole in the top and let the air vent with the little bit of water just flowing back into the tank.
