Rob's thought touches on the whole subject of the bio-community of the pond. It is easy to slip into thinking of the biomass as replicating Nature, which is not accurate. Rather, it is a distorted version of natural interactions. The relatively enormous fishload, the filtration systems, the lack of interaction with a submerged soil base and much more give a very unnatural environment. The bio-community that becomes established will be one adapted to the conditions the pondkeeper provides. The regular maintenance procedures followed are both an intervention to counter degradation and also part of the conditions to which the bio-community is adapted.
We focus on the nitrifiers because we depend on them for the survival of our koi. JR has taught on the broader topic of the biofilm matrix and the resilience it provides for a mature pond. The role of the algal members of the bio-community is less well appreciated, and generally become a focus only when out of control. I believe the next step in having maximal conditions in the koi pond will be in understanding the role of algae in its several forms and learning how to direct algal growth to achieve positive outcomes, rather than merely controlling algae that gets out of hand. I do not think it is coincidence that so many koikeepers who achieve superb results with their koi also have healthy, vibrant (and non-rampant) algae growth in their ponds.
