Since JR has decided to take a break, leaving us with the query as to why hobbyists use UV, I'll turn it around...
A mature koi pond with proper bio-filtration for the stocking rate will remain clear without UV due to the nitrifiers out-competing the free algae that turns water green. (There may be a period of a couple of weeks in the Spring when things are not as well balanced.) However, the water will not be as "gin clear" as it would be with use of UV. Some of the unicellular algae will be present. In the right light, the water may be seen to have a faint greenish cast, although the pond bottom is visible and anything lying on the bottom is readily visible.
Does that hint of green provide any benefit? I think it does.
First, algae prefer ammonia as a source of nitrogen. The green means some ammonia is being consumed before it reaches the nitrifiers. If mechanical removal systems are well-designed, the dying algae can be removed from the system before decomposition releases much contaminant. That is, ammonia is removed without becoming nitrate which retards the full potential of the fish being attained.
Second, the algae is a buffer for any disruption of the bio-filtration system. Many have seen their pond turn green when a power outage or the like has setback the biofilm community. As long as the algae do not get out of control, this is actually a positive. The algae have stepped in to fill the void created by the nitrifiers needing to re-populate, which they quickly will in a properly designed system. When the biofilm restores itself, the algae will decline.
Are there other benefits? I think there are, but let's see what others have to say.
