A minnow trap actually works pretty well for catching water snakes - just bait it with a couple of live fish. Be careful though,... the snake could drown if you don't pull the trap up before he runs out of air.
(The wire mesh minnow traps with a funnel shaped doorway on each end - about $10)
Also, you can stake 3/4" bird netting around the perimeter of the pond for a few weeks. The snakes crawl through the holes in the mesh netting and get caught and twisted up. Works VERY well.
