A reminder regarding PP treatments==

many will be using PP this time of year to eradicte protozoan parasites ( Costia, Chilodonella, trichodina). In the old days we dosed for time of reaction ( 8 hours) or color ( wine red) or by weight. All these techniques had a margin of error in them due to the fact that PP is an indescriminate oxidizer and as such will react with all organic materials , dulling the reaction in the process. Today you can really tell about the strength of a standard dose of PP by using an ORP meter to monitor the true strength of the reaction over time. Typically, a reading of 530- 540 Mv will be a killing reaction for protozoa if held for 4- 6 hours. You will note a drop in that reading after hour one if the organics are too rich surrounding the koi and it's infestation. If you have burned thru the organic content and the reaction holds above 500- 520 over time, you will have an effective kill oxidation for parasites. Doing a 40% water change is always a good idea especially after a PP treatment, and particularly in a situation where algae is present. In the past, 'resistant' costia and 'reinfection' as well as 8-10 hour oxidation periods were usually an illusion caused by the protective organic content of the water. Try using your ORP meter when you do your next parasitic treatment ( protozoa only). I think you will find it interesting and also feel in more control of the reaction. - JR
