Having bred some very hard to breed topical and marine tropical specimens, I'll take the opposite position. And I'll take that position as one who first bred rare species of poison arrow frogs, fantail goldfish, bettas, guppies, killies, africans, my own line of liberty mollie, and the successful spawning and rearing of the black percula clown fish-- On the second generation now.
I've had random spawnings in my pond the first three years of keeping a mixed medium grade of koi just like everyone else. I set up various containers, ponds and feeding ponds for rearing the fish. Always the same results - A FEW interesting mutts! And along the way I gained a whole new respect for the breeders who are actually able to produce a number of fish that adhere closely to the standards for koi.
One thing becomes clear, very quickly, and that is- you need excellent genetics and the ROOM and FOOD source to kick start the few fry lucky enough to carrier the parent traits. And you need skill in culling and space to rear the majority of the spawn.
In this regard, I knew early on that the money and energy was not worth the effort.
Now if one lowers one's expectations and can live with mutts swimming along side high grade koi then God bless. But it was too disruptive to my eye to live with. I gave away the last three sanke I bred recently. This time with a very high class dainichi female and a show stopper male. The results were better but high end tateshita at nest. Life is too short!
Maybe my idea of an amateur breeders club would cause me to rediscover this area, But for now, I'll leave it to the pros. - JR
