Finding a place in this changing hobby

Koi are fascinating creatures! Who can resist the colors and movements of a school of koi swimming in pristine water?! But where is one to start? And more importantly where will one end up in this hobby? Well, most of us start by either trying to buy 'one of every kind' or by buying individual koi for their shine, brightness or glitter. Most of us have found however that these impulses lead to one of two things- overstocking - or- a large collection that looks a little more than 'busy' when viewed in one pond! This is often the stage where we move to less fish and towards a large percentage of gosanke. And when we enter the world of gosanke there seems to be three major directions or outlets; the collection of show fish The collection of tategoi The collection of art and along with those endeavors comes the quest for perfection, jumboism, and the duckling that becomes the swan. The rewards are great but the cliffs are high and the 'falls' can be hard!! The efforts to grow, polish and maintain these apex fish is all consuming and can be very expensive over time. Still don't miss this adventure!! But what happens AFTER this phase of the journey??
