One thing I am pretty sure of, a doitsu koi's skin is not nearly so thick as my own. Having penetrated both with sharp objects accidentally, its easy to scratch and penetrate the doitsugoi's skin.
Having accidentally hooked myself while fishing, I made my partner push the hook point through the skin of my arm to cut the barb off, it was dang tough to get it through.
I've seen doitsugoi easily cut themselves on a sharp rock that would no way easily penetrate my own skin.
I do know that most fish lose most of thier heat through thier gills. Some large, ocean going fish like tunas actually recover heat from thier blood coming from muscle before it gets to the gills where it loses heat.
Fish also take in some toxins through thier gills, as well as the skin.
