Actually Lee I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically agree.
My purpose in posting was not to correct you, but rather to add clarification for those who might be lurking about seeking a "sure fire" remedy for themselves.
Like you, I believe a shot in the dark is better than doing nothing in the light of eminent death. Surrendering without so much as a fight to save the life of one of my wet pet charges goes against my nature.
I am not a veterinarian.
I don't play one on TV (or Koi Boards
)
I don't have a "sure cure" for dropsy'd fish.
I do have general advice based on my own limited knowledge and experience.
IF I found myself dealing with a dropsy situation I would follow a protocol something like this.
1) Place the fish in quarantine/hospital tank with heavy aeration, 0.03 salt, and raise salt slowly toward 0.06 over a period of 24 hours without food.
If that alone gave evidence of improvement I would stop there and observe for a week, slowly lowering salt below 0.01 as the healing process appeared complete.
2) If Salt alone did not provide improved health within 48 hours I would use a broad spectrum antibiotic injection(s) over a period of days and follow the same monitoring procedure.
If Ulcers were present I would treat topically with HP gel or something similar to knock back those secondary infections and reduce stress on the fish.
3) If I had Elbagin available I would treat the water with it as a matter of course to calm and gently treat the fish for general disease organisms as it is a very gentle approach easily handled by the Koi metabolism.
Do I think that is the "sure cure" for Dropsy?
No.
I do think it a reasonable approach that does give the fish a better chance of recovery than doing nothing.
Not really so different from you I think
What I would really appreciate would be some input from some of our fish "pro's". Surely if a breeder/dealer has a Tategoi that becomes infected they take steps to save a high value Koi.
