I don't think you've quite understood my message...
Yes, I had a successful outcome. And, since we woefully generally accept that there are too few if any available veterinarians or other diagnosticians to provide us with a clear and correct path in providing us with a 100% certain life-saving protocol, I don't quite understand why an arguement would insure in accepting that whilst my success cannot be documented as 100% reliable, it was nonetheless, all the same, a positive outcome.
Indeed, I am not encouraging or recommending that anyone should follow my two step solution of salt and Amikacin Sulfate - However, unless 'you' have at your immediate hand a significantly more accurate method to determine what alternative avenue this potentially life threatening situation should take in the treatment of a fish with dropsy, why would anyone dismiss a situation or protocol which did work and was successful?
Again, please accept that I do not stand by my protocol as it being the best solution or the only solution with which to save a fish with dropsy, however, as it worked for me...
I would have said, that unless you have another one hundred percent successful alternative recommendation to provide this board - which is more convenient, more available and more 'certain, then why not - at least, accept...with no other option available, then this two stage option is worth a try.
I only choose to make this point as I wish that someone (either a koi health book or koi health specialist) would have given me an absolute proven and 100% certain protocol which I could have followed... except - 'no one had one'!
Therefore, in lieu of the scarcity of options which are known and/or are available...then 'perhaps' any successful solution should be recognised as better than recommendating a solution wherein one encourages the hobbyist to find a non-existant experienced koi vet with a complete medical lab respectfully complete and available and containing every form of necessary test equipment and technicians to do the necessary testing to provide the urgent needs of the hobbyist with your tendered immediate 'sure fire' remedy which would guarantee to save your dropsy/pinecone diseased (and, dying) fish.
It is my contension that in lieu of the hobbyists having a 100% assured alternative available to them I would vote for the life ring tossed, rather than await the chance passing of a evac-medical helicopter with trained and experienced medic's on-board.
Wishing all a lovely week-end,
I respectfully remain
Lee A
