I think your point is one of the often under appreciated factors that come into play. JR's excellent discourse on the historic development of the unique Japanese culture takes isolation (both natural and self imposed) in to account, but the specific isolation of Yamakoshi adds a layer beyond the "gene pool" of the Carp.
It is noteworthy that Nishikigoi were not developed as a result of the exposure to fine art and beautiful Temples that the Feudal War Lords (land owners) enjoyed. The breeding efforts and development of Koi are the product of the near "aboriginal" culture of the peasant class of isolated sharecropper-farmers.
Aboriginal societies the world over have long looked to what nature gave them to create their own unique art forms, most of which are "life" expressions of one form or another. The Feudal Lords may have initiated the spread of Nishikigoi, but that is usually how "aboriginal art" finds its way into popular culture.
