Shusui/Asagi: Your observation may indicate that scaled fish have better protection against cold (so less swim-bladder problems). On the other hand the koi you saw may have only recently been placed together, the shusui having been kept in colder conditons. I guess we will never know.
However, doitsu varieties do tend to have rounder bodies which may pre-dispose them to more swim-bladder problems. So it may have nothing to do with the skin. That would be my take on it.
As regards skin of humans and thickness thereof, this can vary. You for one must have very thick skin, as a regular poster here. Me too!
