Of course JR is right.
But, you can take pride that your intervention (almost) certainly made the difference. A koi that was going to die was made well.
If I see a koi with dropsy I place it immediately in salted water, to relieve osmotic problems. This is the single most useful thing you can do, in the short term. By the way, it is not unusual for koi with dropsy to appear otherwise unaffected, and to continue to feed, in the earlier stages.
Next I think you have to assume, as you did, that a bacterial problem is indicated, and to treat with antibiotics. If the problem is a tumour or kidney failure, the koi is doomed anyway. The antibiotic may well finish the koi off, due to kidney problems or the toxic effect of billions of dead bacteria in the blood, liver and other organs, which may include the kidneys.
You may just get lucky, as you and your lovely koi did.
This is not to say that dropsy is a particular disease with a particular treatment. However, what you did is much better than tits on a bull; it was the best anyone could do in the circumstances.
