There has been much debate regarding the ability of fish to absorb 'medications' directly from water. Certainly Freshwater fish are always gaining water. This is one reason they also constantly have a stream of weak urine passing out of their bodies. The gills are the selective opening to the outside world for koi in terms of absorption into the blood stream.
But does the skin itself absorb water? And what about the digestive tract, does it also allow water and potential fluid meds to pass into the fish? ( more on the second part in another post)
The skin of koi is protected from the outside by several layers of protection. The mucuos layer which is a hydrated layer is the very first 'barrier' to the outside. This is somewhat protective but because it is a hydrated surface, not completely protective.
The next layer is very protective- that is the scale layer that rises from the dermis. These scales are covered with skin and the scales themselves over lap to form a 'coat of mail' that greatly reduces osmotic/diffusion.
This is no better proven then when disaster hits a collection in the form of overdose or toxin exposure in which we always see the scaleless fish succumb in greater numbers that the scaled fish.
I'd be interested in your feed back on this---
