Unless one takes a fluid sample and cultures it, Called a C&S ( culture and sensitivity) you can't say the swelling is an infection or an osmotic regulatory crisis which in itself can be infection related ( from an infected organ) or of an entirely different origin.
Hit or miss attempts have been successful for the individual case, no doubt. But this has lead some to recommend as THE cure for 'dropsy' ( again, as IT was a disease) the following;
1) Salt baths of great intensity and strength.
2) baths in sterilizing agents
3) baths in antibiotics
4) a diet or force feeding of yoghurt- I kid you not.
5) IP antibiotic injections
Dropsy can be as minor as a mild kidney infection and as serious as a massive tumor engulfing the digestive tract and all major organs. It can be from an infected digestive track or massive bacterial infection from unchecked aeromonas they has worked its way into the blood stream.
To KNOW what works or can't work, one really needs to know the nature and origin of the symptom known as dropsy ( extensive body swelling internally or within the dermis layer).
