Sirs,
I have only had one experience with Dropsy.
And, as my experience is recent, I am happy to share what I learned with NI.
My situation occured no more than six weeks ago to a lovely five year old female Shiro Utsuri.
This particular fish scales had 'over night' swollen out and were splayed in a pine cone effect.
For certain, she had, Dropsy.
Thus, rushing to read the koi health books I have - I read all that was available on the subject, as well as, contacted various koi pals to seek their advice.
The overwhelming conclusion was that the fish had dropsy and that her chance for survival was 'slim to none'.
Interestinly, most of what I read and heard offer no option than to let this fish die or to 'encourage' the end her life. Unwilling to accept either option I commenced to inject her EOD for a total of five days with Amikacin Sulfate - and, while in the midst of doing so, I watched her lovely Shiro Utsuri colour rapidly be overwhelmed by a deep rust 'skin' colour from her gill plate to tail - until her entire body was (both) bloated and had turned a shallow red colour, as though she was bleeding internally.
Accepting the advice of another pal who recommended salt ...I then added salt to a .04% salinity; to the pond.
It is interesting to share with each of you that through-out this period she continued to eat normally.
And, then over a period of two or three weeks, past the injection period, her scales began to recede and the rusty blood colour began to fade and she regained her previous luster.
As everyone of my koi friends will attest I do not have a winning record of bringing sick fish back from the brink, however, this gal now looks completly normal...and, healthy.
Whether she will become sick again or not - I don't know? However, I am eager to share with those who might have an interest - that Amikacin Sulfate and salting her pond water 'most probably' saved her...
With my respects,
Lee A.
