Morning James. Knowing the answer to that 'chicken or the egg' question is above my pay grade. Most of the stuff we appear to know in this hobby is anecdotal in nature. Gathered from the pop aquarium literature, fish nutrition text books and the writings and experience of the Japanese koi community ( hobbyists and their breeders). And there have been many blind alleys along the way, case in point- the great cheerios controversy!
Thom Blischok did some experiments on this and that is the only place/person I know of that did extensive study on koi blood chemistry, swim bladder disease and fatty liver disease study ( history). Unfortunately he has lost interest in the koi hobby due to a certain dealer. - JR
