The terms 'Dropsy' and 'Infectious Dropsy' simply translate as 'poorly' when referred to fish life. Both generally apply to fish showing acutely raised scales starting around the abdomen and later covering the entire fish. The Japanese used to refer to this as 'Pinecone Disease' but it is still 'dropsy'.
As covered above, this can be a result of many core problems or a combination of these which produces the visible symptoms we see at first. A very common cause is eggs that have not been ingested and have decayed inside the fish and produced severe internal bacterial infections which are almost impossible to cure at this advanced stage. Over the years I have seen many Koi showing these symptoms but it is certainly not as 'common' as Koi showing bacterial lesions for example. As I can recall I have never witnessed the pinecone symptoms with any former bacterial lesions present.
Without surgery or X-ray and some person who knows exactly what he/she is looking at it is almost impossible to get to the root cause and many (most) are not prepared to pay the cost of this specialised and costly treatment.
Of all the cases I have come across where no form of treatment has been 'chanced' all fish have died without exception. However, there have also been many instances where a broad-spectrum injection has effected a total cure that has never, as far as I know, manifested itself again.
This is not an answer because there are none really, however it's a 'chance' rather than doing nothing at all. The toss of a coin?
Waddy.
