Hi, if a fish has the pine cone syndrome due to definite renal failure, all antibiotics are contraindicated,especially the amino glycosides.Or should be used with caution as last chance saloon.
These antibiotics have difficulty clearing healthy kidneys. If I think the problem is due to a wound or external problem I usually stick with one of the Quinolones such as Baytril...unless I have identified a specific bacterium sensitive to a particular group of antibiotics.
If a pine coned fish recovers after antibiotics, I would imagine that it still had good renal function even though it appeared to have dropsy???
