I necropsied several of the fish. One thing that was common throughout the fish was a lot of fat stored inside the abdominal cavity. Not a little mind you, but at least as much fatty tissue as organs by weight and volume. A lot of it surounding the liver.
As far as the kidney failure, that is/has been my understanding of dropsy, but without more formal education into a diseased kidney and what to look for, I am not qualified to answer that. The kidneys without fail were almost to the point of liquification, but then so were a lot of the other organs as well. Which in my mind would speak to bacterial infection?
But was the bacterial infection first to cause the problem, or something else that allowed the bacterial invasion of the organs. I think the latter.
Now, in non dropsy symptomatic fish that are brought here either near or after death, I have yet to find that type of fatty buildup around the organs. To the contrary, there is very little fatty build up in the abdominal cavity.
But then again, I will admit that my findings are hardly scientific, as the fish represent a small population of very sick fish that are brought to me for care. But when one sees the same symptoms with the same pond background and food, then one wonders if the results are related.
