Hi,my opinion for what it is worth,is that dropsy (bloating pine cone appearance) is due to kidney failure's,and end organ damage resulting in heart failure and death.Usually due to some underling stressor or disease.I think the organ failure is probably the end stage of a protracted bacterial disease process.Causes ..??
There are numerous triggers that can initiate the dropsy disease process, personally I don't think Koi sticks alone are the culprits.
