What's that old rock n roll song-- "expand your mind and the rest will follow"?
Dropsy is a condition, not a disease. When you see it in a population and not just an individual, you should always think ' population dynamic'.
Since this condition involves basic organic systems - gills, or kidneys or swim bladder, you can , via the process of elimination begin to diagnose what actually is causing this symptom.
In groups showing dropsy you are down to infection of organs like the kidney ( the most common), poisoning or destroyed gills ( ammonia, infestation/infection).
It is understandable that beginners in koi medicine look right to the symptom and begin to isolate the fish having the problem as the center of the problem. And of course experienced hobbyists will see the falacy in this tunnel vision approach. Often the problem is a dynamic, environmentally related and frequently fleeting and now departed- leaving just secondary symptoms and secondary problems.
In the tunnel vision approach, we tend to look for things to blame. Food being one of them. Rotten food with rancid fat content or mold? yes. Type, shape, size of pellet etc - no. Koi chew their food. They chew their food well using crushing teeth and a grinding stone located by the gill structure. The food is mixed with water while being chewed. The food is then fine, wet and moving thru a very long digestive tract. Other than the fish being ill and not able to digest and absorb food due to some pre-existing illness, there is no reason why food brands of configuration out of the bag would cause dropsy symptoms. - JR
