Your observation, anecdotal as it is, may have some basis to show a correlation between stick type feeding and occurence of dropsy.

This does not establish cause and effect though. Have you considered the possibility that koi keepers opting for a cheap feeding regime may be the koi keepers who also opt for cheap filtering solutions, poor husbandry and over-crowding?

That would be my guess.
