Steve,this is my third gravity fed system. I have two bottom drains on FG pond 6500 gallons going to two nexus 300, AND RETURNING USING two 15000 SQ pumps... one for each nexus and bottom drain.

One goes straight back to the pond and one returns back through a UV.

Then I have two external 12000 SQ pumps pulling from two skimmer basket,one back through a UV and one back through a heater these two skimmers have no primary solid handling capability other than the baskets..Both these skimmers are separate to the nexus filtration.

The pumps on the skimmers are not solid handling pumps. I installed four jap matting cartridges in both baskets on Friday,one in the basket (and for belt and braces) on tightly fitted under the baskets on top of the outlet to the pumps.

The system so far is fantastic,has a few blips but the only real problem thus farwas this elastic type small leaves had evaded capture before arriving in the pumps.

I still think the mats are the most inexpensive option,or probably some sort of in line gravity solid handling filter,but the expense of doing that to both skimmers verses jap matting (at least a trial) has to be my first cheapest/ simplest option.

I will update on the amount of maintenance involved
