I see, and yes I absolutely agree that isolation is key. As you know, my mind is blown every time I consider this sentence---
"Once individuals are isolated from the main wild gene pool and allowed to bred, for even a few generations, they will NEVER again be the same as the wild gene pool."
I was with you regarding the concept/vision of koi being a series of recessive genes ( fostered by man's whims and then his selective breeding programs). I struggled a bit with the kanoko example, is all. But I do see your point and we are within a few degrees of having exactly the same vision/opinion on the subject.
I posted this before but it's worth mentioning again- National Geographic did a fascinating micro- genetic study on dogs. The question they were trying to answer was - " Why have dogs, a natural line of wolves/jackels, changed So much in appearance in such a relatively short time from their wild type ancestors?"
To demonstrate the human influence on the genetic expression process, the researcher took a box of puppies to a local park and sat them along side him on one of the part benches. As random strollers passed by he invited them to see the puppies. Each test subject was encouraged to pick a puppy they liked to hold. The puppies with the most 'immature traits' ( short puppy noses and large eyes, furry bodies) were chosen the majority of the time or more adult looking puppies. The result demonstrated how appealing phenotype played a huge role in changing the look of the domestic dog compared to wild and feral populations ( like say the Dingo). Very fascinating stuff! - JR
