You can be amazingly difficult to have a conversation with JR. I wasn't differentiating color genes from pattern genes. Hajiro, Matsukawabake, and Shiro Utsuri are all black and white Koi,... but with different pattern types. We list these different patterns as Koi 'types',... just as we list Kanoko as a Koi type.
To consolidate - what I'm saying is that in order to truly see the history of Nishikigoi, and why it 'Could only happen in Niigata' we really have to consider the impact that isolation had on the gene pool. I believe beyond the art and the culture, isolation and tight in-breeding as a result of this isolation (both in a remote area, and in small pools within that remote area) IS what opened Pandora's Box. Sort of the 'Big Bang' of Koi,... the event or the situation that set the stage for such genetic diversity,... whereas carp in the rest of the world were still charcoal black/brown.
Obviously selective breeding has played a huge part from there,... but even then odd unique characteristics pop up like free gifts, and a creative breeder will see the potential there, and will refine it.
Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood
