Wait, wait, wait guys, you’re moving forward in time too fast. We’re talking about the ‘history’ of Nishikigoi and the creation of Koi types,... and now suddenly we’re talking about the the most refined breeds? Let’s consider the question most often posed,... “Why is the birthplace and home of Koi the mountains of Niigata? We really have to consider what the layering and overlapping of genes caused - an isolated community raising Carp as a protein source in isolated pools (rice fields) and in small in-ground holding ponds - which I believe set the stage for the genetics we see today,... constant in-breeding,... which led to color variations,... and THEN curiosity, and art, and culture, and craftsmanship took it from there.
Trust me on this, a LOT of the characteristics we see in our modern breeds were gifts from the Carp Gene Faerie - because of layering of recessive traits,... then they were refined, manipulated, polished, built upon by creative breeders. No one has mentioned ‘solely’!
There is reason we don’t see ‘the sky’s the limit’ on Koi colors and types,... it’s because there ARE limits,... limits to colors, limits to combinations of colors, and patterns. There’s a reason we don’t see purple Koi with yellow circles down the back,... or Koi with ‘USA’ spelled on the back in red, white, and blue. IF a breeder were able to have an artistic vision, and then produce that vision exactly we would have many wild designs of Koi. That’s not the case. They have pushed forward with crosses,... then refined the characteristics that they can. Koi with the British flag on the back would certainly sell better than blood pudding, but it simply can’ t be done. The Japanese flag can be done. It’s a relatively simple design.
I’m certainly not suggesting that Kohaku and Showa were stumbled upon, BUT the anscestors to these newer breeds were,... or the characteristics that make them up were.
Asagi was stumbled upon, Bekko, Matsukawabake, Hajiro,... do we believe for a minute that a breeder set out to produce a black Koi with white fin tips and white on the face??? No,... it happened when a particular cross was made. The Koi we know as Hajiro happens when what JR labels as the ‘white spreading gene’ is added to Magoi,... and this can be arrived at from many different routes.
Kanoko??? Do we believe a breeder set out to produce a Kohaku with a dappled red patterning because they envisioned and wanted that look? No,... it just happened sometime during the evolution of Kohaku,... a gift from the Carp Gene Faerie,... and then someone gave this happening a name,... which makes it ‘sellable’. Goshiki and Koromo are other examples,... the dark robing was not thought up,... it happened during experimental breeding,... and then was claimed, and refined,... and is still being refined.
It took the layering and/or shaking up of genes through years of unintentional in-breeding to open Pandora’s Box,... and give us the wild color varieties we see today.
The female offspring of Common US Carp X Kohaku cross
.
One of the offspring of an Ochiba pairing. The generation that created the parents was Chagoi X Kohaku.
