I agree with your 'disagree', Ray! The breeding of the varieties was a VERY deliberate progression of pattern, guanine content and scale types. It was rolled out with a greater vision in mind.
Still within that over all trend line, there were always individuals doing experimental crosses of breeds to see if a another branch of unique breed could be stumbled upon. Usually ending in odd balls of not much lasting power.
Finally, there was the reality of what the public would actually buy that over rode this grand vision at one point or another. - JR
