Bloccked pumps from skimmers

Hi everyone. I am having issues with my new pond skimmers. The pumps on both have became blocked and overheated very rapidly and one of the UV's as a result overheated I am in a very high maintenance (trees foliage) What would be the best way forward to prevent the pumps getting blocked again so quickly.I suppose the simplest remedy would be jap matting in the skimmer baskets? Any advice/help appreciated Thanks James
