beautiful! Now let me finish this off with two definitions;
species- a zoological/biological grouping term that describes the basic taxonomic unit of organisms that have similar morphology, DNA and are capable of interbreeding.
sub-species- a subset of a species usually created by geographic isolation and distant distribution, the subspecies is closely related and resembles other subspecies of it's set. Subspecies can easily interbred but retain unique individual characteristics due to isolated or distant distribution.
Please note that by definition all subspecies are within a species. And the further, as species move away from one another within the higher classification of Genus, the less viable the offspring become.
Interspecific hybrids are the result of a breeding of two different species. The degree of sterility is often contributed to the differences in Chromosome count of each of the individual species.
Intraspecific hybrids are a result of the crossing of subspecies within a species. They typically have the same chromosome count ( although not true of koi!) and therefore are fertile.
