Interesting study and unexpected results.
Common carp/goldfish hybrids are bred on farms all over Asia and even in the US specifically for the production of a food fish called "silver carp" by Asians. This is a hybrid between Cyprinus carpio female and Carassius auratus (or Carassius carassius-Crucian Carp) males. This silver carp is not to be confused with the filter feeding fish of the same common name (Hypothalmichthyes molitrix).
This fish is sometimes produced using koi instead of magoi type common carp. It is a specialty food that is eaten at the time of Chinese New Year.
The market size is about 500 grams (one pond or so). It is a relatively high value fish (as compared to the more common channel catfish (Ictaluris punctatus) and retails around $6 to $10 a pound.
Because this hybrid is between two genera and not just two species, I was always under the impression they were mules and not viable. From the above posts, it looks like the hybrid being looked at is the reciprocal cross (male carp and female goldfish) and this may be why it has some viable offspring.
I know that goldfish can carry but are not affected by KHV. So it would make sense that the hybrid is also resistant. Many such hybrids are resistant to disease that affects one or the other species in the cross. Probably a result of hybrid vigor among other things.
My curiosity is whether or not the F2 and following (Fx) generations from various backcrosses are both viable and resistant to KHV.
BTW, I commonly see both male and female koi reaching sexual maturity at around one year of age if grown locally in an year with an abnormally warm winter. Maybe as many as 10% of a spawn.
