Thanks Michael, As you said, hard to tell the Chinese this- or anything for that matter!
I'm sure it could be proven, if we had a time machine, that colored common carp mutations showed up in food stock in China regularly.White, maybe kigoi albinos, black , orange etc. And they may have been collected and concentrated in ponds of rich men and monks as far back as the written record. But they didn't go an inch further.
Perhaps it's because of land issues or water issues or the fact that china has such a good river system ( easy access to fish of many varieties in both rivers and lakes. But it comes to ornamental fishes, china went another route with the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) and some say the Crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Whatever the root carp species was 1200 years ago- that is the domain of Chinese selective breeding programs, as I'm sure you agree.
The Japanese however have been breeding carp ( common carp) in rice paddies for a long long time. As well as some other less popular carp species. Carbs and protein for the long winter months. In fact, I was very excited a short while ago to see a travel log on the travel network talking about the harvesting of rice and carp in a part of Japan not known for koi. The locals lowered the water and then with baskets went in to the rice paddies and scooped up 2 pound grey or brown/black magoi from the 12 inches of muddy water. I couldn't help but think I was watching a ritual that has occurred on that particular plot of Japanese land for the last 500 years! Who needs a time machine after all! Change is good but sometimes ' no change' is better! JR
