Hi JR
In the study area, accidental and deliberate releases of goldfish out number those of koi. Hybridization appeared to be regular. 23 individuals were caught, with 21 of them derived from a male carp - these were identified from the contribution of genes passed on from the sperm mitochondria. This would suggest that smaller, younger males are succesful spawners. While you are correct about the need for many many generations to build up a significant population, I am aware of male carp becoming parents within two years and know of one local hobbiest who as obtained a small amount viable milt from a male koi in the first year.
I am not aware of the fertility rates in a hobbiest pond. These hybrids are a novelty and am not aware of anyone deliberately attempting to backcross to Nishikigoi.
There are a few studies to test the hybrid fertility dating back to the earliest I can find in 1955. There are various results in both the low and high range. There is one study in 1992 from Tokyo University of Fisheries that had "fertilization rates were from 52.4 to 88.6%, and free swimming rates from 2.6 to 34.4%"
