A PhD thesis (Haynes 2009) on feral carp population genetics in the Murray-Darling River system of Australia the author summised that goldfish-carp hybrids posed a threat to carp control in the future as the hybrids are not 100% sterile and can produce a fertile F2 backcross that might one day lead to KHV resistance in carp given that goldfish are already resistant.
