It is all to easy to perceive your own koi in a critical manner - especially if you attend koi shows (but don't show).
I often hear people at shows say "I have koi at home better than that" but i do think that in a lot of cases it is more of a questions of "My koi are not this good"
Hobbyists when they first get out and about and see high quality koi are often looking for the bad points in their own Nishikigoi.
I only have a small'ish (3000 UK gallon) pond and this forces me to rank my koi every now and again to thin stocks to make way for better quality koi and this can lead to me being over critical especially as i don't spend huge sums of money on my collection.
I have koi in my collection which are not perfect but will have a home for life - i definitely look at these koi in a different way to those that are living on the edge so to speak.
I think it would help if the general focus is on education of hobbyists to appreciate the positives of any particular koi and learn what makes a good one rather than what the bad things are.
