Hi JR
Interesting indeed. There is much more going on than we know. Is the death rate fall of observed in food and feral carp as well?
In Australia, the release of rabbit calicivirus has gone a through similar experience where the death rates are now lower than during the first few years - we are now roughly a decade on from the first release. In this virus, part of the puzzle is knowing that the kittens are immune in the first year. So what you see is a rise and fall each other year in the populations. The rabbit experience draws attention to the need to research the life cycle and relationship between host and virus. But, the problem is, much of the research is grant based and therefore results goals out weight understanding how the virus works. The calci virus is said to still kill millions of rabbits every year - enough to keep the money for the monitoring ongoing. The drop in deaths has renewed interest finding the next biological control agent rather than explaining the history. There will be money for the first and none for the latter.
As you know, KHV is currently under investigation as a possile biological control of carp in Australian waterways. Initial lab results indicate significant deaths. The current stage also involves determining its effect on native fish. The researchers have also indicted the need to investigate it's persistance in the environment. However, I do not yet see a brief that the research will examine the death rate fall off. On this ocassion, the rabbit experience or the overseas koi experience does not seem to teach any lessons even though it is in the interest of carp control.
