good stuff, no doubt. But one word of caution; the 'names' of koi of old are not necessarily the same fish of the same name today. The old asagi and ki bekko were nothing like the asagi or bekko of today. This is not just a matter of 'improvement'. But rather a different 'formula' of genes that created the modern versions of the name.
Likewise, there are many other formulas that have created 'a look' that assumed the 'name' that come from entirely different breedings.
This is exposed often with kumonryu types, hariwake types ( kikusui for instance) and ochiba types. In the very big picture they are all part of the same gene pool so it could be looked at as irrelevant. But in terms of lines and breeding specific breeding programs, many 'same name varieties' are not created the same way and are not related although they are called by the same variety name.
The reason for this is that many known varieties are an illusion made by crossing two established varieties. To add to this, some small breeders will cross - crosses! This is to get a sellable individual, but it is a sort of house of cards as the there is no 'next generation' as the fish was constructed by crossing, crosses in one generation.
Put another way, if we accpeted 'cocker-poo' as a breed of dog and then crossed it with ' lab-a-doodles' ( another made up breed name to imply a cross) we would then have a total mix we would give another 'breed' to. This is purely illusionary although we might have a momentary identifiable phenotype. Please note, this is entirely different when you slowly change showa from a black based fish with dilutions of white based fish to introduce traits of size and beni intensity.
