A good solid color (unpatterned), metallic, doitsu, or gin rin koi are equal in accomplishment and value to a good gosanke is something I have heard time and again from koi dealers and breeders. coincidentally, they are usually trying to sell a solid color, metallic, doitsu, or gin rin koi priced comparable to a similar size gosanke.
JR give a lot of indepth reasoning for the value of gosanke being greater than non-gosanke. Here is another important reason to consider. Gosanke especially female gosanke take longer to finish and once they peak they can hold their beauty far longer than non gosanke especially metallics, gin rin, and doitsu. On my very 1st trip to Japan in 2000 I bought a 3 year old kohaku from Toshio Sakai. It is still to this day the most expensive koi I ever bought. However, it is the oldest koi in my pond at twelve years old and the only koi i bought on that trip that I still own. It has won Grand Champion and many other awards at shows including a best in size 8 award at our last show. If I take the purchase price and divide it by 9 years the cost "per year" so far to own this koi is much less than many two year old metallic, gin rin, single color, and doitsu. Even better this koi has not peaked yet. Perhaps it will one day win a second GC award. Regardless the pleasure it has brought us is huge and we hope to enjoy it's beauty for many more years.
Let's look at this another way. A few years back I started buying my wife a flowering orchid plant for valentines day vs a dozen cut roses. THe flowering orchid plants cost a bit more but they usually bloom for 6-8 weeks vs maybe 1 week for the cut flowers before they were tossed out. Also they live on and usually bloom again each year. On per week blooming basis the orchid plants are way way more value than the dozen cut roses.
