All good questions--- And I don't know if I have any real answers but I do have some observations and opinions;
If you go back to earliest of records you find that the first real selective breeding programs were on higoi. And to this day, Japanese collectors value really good specimens of aka muji and intense beni goi in high regard- much more so that the Brit dealers who see these as throw-aways. There is no doubt that nishikigoi 'looks' are Japanese culture inspired. And some of that aesthetics is lost on westerners unless they are personally evolved enough to see things thru the eyes of others.
In that tradition of ancient taste ( bold colors like red and black and subtle refinement of other colors) there is a shocking level of practical commercialism. " You have a very good eye, foreigner" is about the most cynical phase within our hobby, invented as part of a sales presentation to the gullible beginner in Japan. In this regard, there is a certain amount of hype involved in gosanke. I can agree with you on this point.
I think there is no question that surrounding the truth, history and deepest details of the hobby are tiger traps including " emperor's with no clothes" and " Gaijin, you have a VERY good eye!" comments. ( Remember, Gaijin means ‘outside person’ and we are trying to understand INSIDE perspective on all these things and not content to remain outside)
Still, if you battle thru and get a perspective ( as you pointed out when you said,“But I propose that to understand nishikigoi at the truest level, you have to appreciate the refinements of all varieties equally.” ) I think you/me and all of us, then begin to get the culture, the history and the levels of genetic accomplishment associated with each variety. In the end, separate the groups that have been simply selectively breed to improve the look of one or two traits or colors from those that have not only color improvement but also pattern manipulation all on transformed skin. And although these refined traits are now being bred back onto ‘lesser varieties’ to improve them and give them things like complex , translucent skin, they will never be as impressive as gosanke as they are the cutting edge of that very trait that is being transferred to related white based skin varieties ( shiro, goromo, goshiki, tancho, doitsu gosanke, metallic gosanke ).
There are then the ‘offensive’ varieties that are really ALL about marketing. I was appalled by the suggestions in a now defunct magazine that suggested the rise of beni kumonryu and weird crosses of chagoi and other junk fish were the new wave of nishikigoi! That was kinda shocking and I could never look at that publication as anything more than one big commercial from that point on. Western agents can definitely create an illusion of what the core of the hobby is. Let the buyer beware. JR
