Sorry, I don't agree --
Yamabuki are not seen in numbers at many koi joints because they are not focused on. But just stop by Isumiya and you will see all the jumbo yama you could ever ask for. Finding 'perfection' even is Yama is not easy and you can pick quite a few of them aparat for this or that- but generally they are all very very good.
The ever cranky Grumpy will tell you, the breeders for the most part, produce what sells. This is a lesson he taught me way back in 1991. He was right. Kohaku are quite easy to breed. And they fetch the most cash so everyone breeds ( or tries to breed) kohaku. Kohaku is THE fish. Coming from two HUGE advancements in koi genetics- the red mutation from asaji magoi stock and the leucistic white mutation. Then the dorsal pieball mutation. Not a natural morph like asgai or higoi or albino. But rather a compounding of those natural morphs. But they are around in different forms for decades upon decades. So the old timers say " koi starts with kohaku and ends with kohaku". Meanwhile the breeders give the people what they want and also a variety that is easier to produce. And those that can not, resort to the easy wild type and shiny varieties. They are all sellable as tosai.
The next level is the truly difficult to make- showa ( a black based- hypermelanistic- fish) and sanke ( a white based- leucistic- mutation) they compound each with recessive traits of the other base color. White receives sumi and black receives the spreading gene for leucism. REMARKABLE!
If you look at the metallics what you see are two simple formulas-
1) the cross of one hakari mono ( yama or purachina) with another ( yama or purachina). This gives the SAME mutation trait of intense shine and a combined pattern on top and bottom of the two parents. So the offspring are purachina with a pattern the color of yamabuki. The early harawake are carrying the same distribution of pattern as a wild carp- light on botton and sides and dark on top. Only 'light on bottom' is purachina and 'dark on top' is yama.
2) the second approach to making metallics is simply to transfer platinum skin to all the other existing breeds. This is just selective breeding 101 where you transfer one trait to existing genetics.
