Another thought provoking post sir, but I am gonna throw my two cents at this ( especially with the current exchange rate).
Just because someone says its the best, and then expalins the difficulties in making one, and the history behind such a beastie doesnt make a man like it. Some will buy into all the hype, in fact most do. But I propose that to understand nishikigoi at the trueist level, you have to appreciate the refinements of all varieties equally.
I know that either way you wont get a Chag crowned G.C because of politics, but if the Chag is best fish in show,it should win.
With the example of Yamabuki, yeh your right single coloured lump, a bit sparkley, but nothing special.
How many 80 cm, scale perfect, even fukurin, not a blemish, perfect lustre, even coloured, Yamas are swimming around in breeders facilites across Japan? Then compare them with the same standard of Sanke's. I would go out on a limb and say you will find more Sanke's than Yama's.
Why? we have already agreed that Sanke are hard to breed, and Yama's have no real value.
Does it not come back to Marketing, Go-Sanke are the most desirable because we are told they are, nothing more.
If it were simply down to taste, I wonder how many of those Kohakus with really big shimis would be sold.
Have you guessed I cant stand Sanke
Now a high quality Kikokuryu is worth its weight in gold
