Yes, JR, we are having a more prolonged 'winter' in Florida this year than we have gotten for quite a while. I am not happy about the camellia blossoms being singed by frost, but the cooler pond temps are allowing a longer fast than I've done previously. Although now into the 6th week without feeding, I have a hard time noticing any weight loss. Perhaps a little, but that may just be my imagination wishing it was so. The pond got down to 54F very briefly, and generally has been in the 60F to 65F range. It is now edging into the 50sF and likely will stay below 60F for about a week if forecasts are accurate, so I am thinking the fast will continue for a total of about 50 days. That is longer than I have fasted previously. Perhaps some noticeable weight loss will occur. If the fatty build-up in the internal organs is consumed first, then I can be hopeful there is real benefit to the koi. A couple of larger gals are still carrying a lot of eggs. I probably should do a controlled spawning outside the pond in a couple of months. But, I'm not sure which is the greater risk... them carrying the eggs, or me carrying them to a spawning tank.
