If only the shiroji was brighter.
If only the pec wasn't bent.
If only those scales weren't missing.
IF only that tobi hi waasn't so prominent.
If only the tail wasn't damaged.
If only......

JR makes some excellent points about judging a koi with exceptional quality with transportation or husbantry damage vs another with lesser quality but no damage. This is one of the toughest decisions for most koi judges because it is relative to the type, location, and to a certain extent the assumpion of what caused the damage (disease or transport injury). Also relative to the perceived differences in quality. Sometimes these "judges" discussions seem to diagram and disect a koi into it's "parts" when in the end it needs to be viewed/appreciated as a "total" and very rare living art.

Some other boards have posters saying that this year's Grand Champion just isn't up to the best of past winners.

Still others discuss the politics of a show. GC selected because owner was Chairman of the Society. Dealers vote to support the breeders they partner with, North vs South, etc. etc. etc. .....

I believe it was reported that there were only 3 votes out out about 85 total that seperated the Grand Champion and the Reserve.

However in the end none of these political or academic discussions should devalue the importance of a show especially one of the most important shows in the world. We all have our top favorite GC koi of all time. Is it realistic to think that every All Japan Show will produce a new top favorite GC koi?
