I see the Florida koi are getting a cooling down this weekend. Take full advantage and try and stop feeding for a while.
It is a pretty simple thing- studies show that the natural tendency of carp to store carbs in the form of glycogen in the liver is intensified if the fish are fed a carb diet-- and really intensified, if fed a high carb diet ( breads, fruits, the typical koi pellets etc). The good news is, studies show that domestic carp fed this high protein, high carb diet, unlike wild carp, will shed that stored material rapidly when fasted or allowed a stasis. This is 'a natural survival tendency' gone 'confused' in our captive environment. If this draining of the liver and other organs is not done, there is a real possibility of the fish developing one of two deadly diseases- fatty liver disease and ovarian cancer or ovarian cysts.
My daughter, when see was a little girl, loved her hamsters! She loved to overfeed them and watch them fill their cheeks with massive amounts of seeds, carrots etc. The hamsters, on the other hand, never went thru a winter period, yet still they collected massive stores of food and horded them in the corner of the cage. Eventually the moistened food simply rottened. It's not nice to fool mother nature. - JR
