Thanks. I didn't want to talk about the large grey elephant in the middle of the living room without first getting your input, Mark.
That showa is an EXCEPTIONAL showa for sure. A perfect separation of beni and sumi and a unique and highly appealing pattern. It is a rare showa that does not have the colors battling with one another within the dermis. And at 80 plus cm, you start to forgive some things--
IF the tail bone were snapped, which is a very common injury in large struggling koi, then it would be hard to rationalize why the koi should win. Part of the challenge of raising and showing large koi is to keep them injury and scare free. I have, for instance, a killer female sanke that I'm sure could hold her own in any show in America. But she has the exact same injury plus a snapped tail bone in the upper section of the tail. It is very noticeable and really deforms the fish's body line and presence. So instead of being a show fish, I have spawned her and will keep the top five in her memory. Honestly, in a show she would only serve as a real delemma for the judges- what to do with a great fish with a 'what a shame' type problem?
I think most hobbyists don't think too much about the show itself when they see a picture of a winning fish. A winning fish, of course, is the best fish in the show that day. If you think about it, a GC in most shows reflects the level of competition that day and not an ideal or perfection. I'm sure the judges got it right and they looked passed the injury and trimming of the tail as a husbandry or transport issue. And likely they went right to the 'genetics present' and rarity value of the fish. Still, I would like to have seen the competition—
