Good Morning Mike, well to suggest that I'm resisting change is rather insulting to me. I mean, I take no real offense but what I do for a living REQUIRES that I not only accept change but adapt to it immediately. There is NO industry that is more a 'living organism' than mine. The treasury and the treasury bond market is at the heart of the effort to turn us away from a depression, as we speak. And I am in that market and follow the changes hourly. People don't realize this yet, but investing as turned from a game of checkers ( the bull market in a strong economy) to a game of chess where two to three moves have to contemplated and devised before a penny is committed to a portfolio. But I digress---
I think you have come a remarkable distance since you began in the hobby. And you are one of those I respect most on these many boards as I think you get it and have moved thru the phases beautifully and smartly. Notice I said " in the hobby and not keeping koi". Because I see you as being " in the hobby". But, and I hope you do not mind me saying this- you are still a little naive about the commercial side of the hobby. Please take that as an observation and not an insult. The commercial side is just business. I will tell you that I have heard with my own ears two VERY well known dealers say to me that they really don't have too much interest in koi and are strictly in it for the money. That is a fact and you would probably tell me I was a lair if I told you the names. But, on my soul, it was said to me by these individuals. Now you and I are big boys and we can understand that a good entrepreneur does the homework and finds businesses with big margins and invests money there. So that’s perfectly OK in a capitalist society. But this is not the soul of the hobby. There is a hobby and the associations are it’s home. For instance, the standards for judging and assessing koi are held by the societies of the hobby and not the internet or message boards. If any one learns anything from me, it is coming from a person deep within the hobby’s associations.
To take this a step further, it is very normal for enthusiastic beginners and obsessive collectors to want to get close to sources of their passion. And dealers know this. I was very close to a few dealers when I was coming up. First choices of stock and discounts were the goals- not to mention that the dealers I hung around with had a passion I was drawn to. But when you get behind the curtain, you also risk the loss of innocence.
I tell you all this to say, the hobby and I do define that as a social group of koi fanatics
, is the soul of koi. This is where the decades of accumulated knowledge lies. Everyone starts here and then stays or drifts out. But the core remains. The rest is commercial and often suspect. IHMO. The frustrating thing about writing some as candid as this is, I KNOW that a dozen dealers would agree with my assessment, yet scores of amateurs would think I'm being harsh. And some might even be threatened by my words. ?? JR
