There was a similar thread on another forum about good color and for me the answer is the same on both counts.
The healthier the pond the more the skin will be able to achieve its greatest potential for "beauty". People often look at a Kohaku with beni going south and fail to see the overall condition of the skin. The health of the skin can't be fixed by any silver bullet magic potions. It can only be brought to its peak and hopefully maintained there with a healthy environment that includes every aspect of water quality and diet. We can't outperform genetics with "special food" or water treatments in a bag or bottle, but we can certainly diminish it by missing the boat.
Speaking for myself, our Koi look there individual best when our pond is at its healthiest. If our water parameters deviate from their best there are a few "canary" Koi that tell me things are going off even before water tests can pick it up. I rather like the fact that we have a few hypersensitive fish to send up a red flag faster than a test tube or meter is capable of.
My weakest fish are my best water test
