Morning David, I think what most of those products and ideas have is 'lack of things' that helps shiroji stay clean. It is what they 'don't add to the skin that counts.
The skin is made up of mucous, epidermis and dermis. And each can be a collecting ground for substances and waste compounds from the diet. It is the fatty layer and the muscle that store dietary surplus. And the composition of the upper layers really demonstrates the old adage “ You are what you eat”!
Wheat germ formula is lacking in high protein ( just shrimp meal) and refresh, of course, is a water quality purifier/flocculent. So each one of these things helps in a different way to influence the look of the skin.
Shiroji is really the dermis layer. And that white translucent look is created by both the arrangement and type of collagen fibers. If the genetic potential is there for clear light reflecting and absorbing protein strands then you will have white glowing skin. But diet plays a role. So if enzymes and globular proteins are collected in the skin then you will have a yellowing or off white look to the fiber structures.
In addition, things like metabolic rate or efficiency for temperature play a role as does overall temperature and oxygen levels. All things needed for good circulation and normal oxidation.
I think we have all seen ponds were all the koi have brown or buff colored noses and a corse texture to the slightly yellowed skin. The common assumption is that all the fish are males and that it is hormones surging thru their bodies that results in the off white coloring. Although this can be true, more often it is diet related and can be reversed over a few seasons. Shiro utsuri are notorious for this look. Often it is genetic reality. But sometimes it is a combination of water quality , low oxygen levels and a diet too rich in proteins. - JR
